((Note: This is an alternate AIVAS-free Pern))
Namyris Weyr
The end of the Ninth Pass found Pern with an overspill of dragons. Each Weyr had at least two golds, many bronzes, and greens coming out their ears. Obviously, there was something that needed to be done before Pern could be sucked dry. Holders were still grateful to the dragonriders for protecting them when Thread fell, but without the threat literally hanging over their head, the Weyrleaders knew that it was just a matter of time before they began to protest to the tithing to a useless Weyr. They decided that it was time to expand South again.
One site explored was the bank of the Black Rock River. It turns out, there wasn’t just black rocks there, but also gold. The Smithcrafthall on the western side of the river quickly established a hold. Shortly thereafter, a Weyr was also founded, closer to the ocean, on the eastern side.
Two Weyrwomen were sent to the new Weyr, and it carries their names. Nami, the older of the two, was of Southern Weyr, and all thought that her queen Maleketh would Rise first, but High Reaches sent a Queen that was overdue to Rise, Helenoth of Yris, the younger pair. The bad feelings between the North and the South started subtly when Helenoth Rose first and became Senior, especially because Maleketh Rose only a day after.
With a double clutch on the Sands and two Queen eggs, the tension between the two continents was forgotten in the high spirits that preceded a Hatching. The candidates were for the most part equally from the North and the South, and the Southern children impressed the progeny of the Northern queen and vice versa, bringing the Weyr irrevocably closer together. The only differences in the young dragonets were that those from Maleketh were blockier in build than those from Helenoth.
After this first successful Hatching, the other Weyrs allowed Namyris its autonomy. That all ended some ten turns later, when Maleketh Rose once more. An Istan Queen, visiting Southern, Rose also, and a fight ensued. Helenoth and Maleketh had become close as a Queen from a different Weyr could be with another Queen, and instead of restraining Maleketh or the other Queen, she went after the other queen herself, she and Maleketh ganging up on her. Though she was outnumbered, the Istan Queen was bigger, and she took both of her attackers between with her. This occurrence shook Pern to its core.
Though Ista’s Queen attacked Maleketh first, Ista claimed that Yris sent her Queen after her, and the rift became noticeably wider between the Southern continent and the North. Eventually, Southern Weyr got fed up with the fighting, especially since they were caught in the middle of it. They split up, some staying in the South in Namyris, and others migrating North. Pern went into a downward spiral from there, reverting to an eight-Interval-like stupor.
Pern was hit hardest when Benden was destroyed. A freak earthquake ripped through the eastern coast of the Northern continent. The once-mighty Weyr literaly caved in upon itself. Those who survived were mostly dragonriders who escaped between, and they disprsed among other Weyrs, for the most part unhurt but severly shaken demoralized.
The last blow came one hundred and fifty turns later. A mysterious disease swept the planet’s fire lizard population, striking hardest in the South due to the profusement of the creatures. It eventually stopped in the North, but not before it affected the Clutch in Ista. In the South it mutated and infected the dragons. They really either got it or didn’t, and those who got it died, as there was no known cure. Many dragons, mostly greens and blues, got it, and so did two of the Queens. One died, but the other Queen, who was gravid at the time, miraculously recovered.
When half of the eggs on the Sands of Ista, including the rare and precious queen egg, failed to Hatch, the South was blamed, Ista obviously still remembering the grudge that Namyris rightfully bore for turns. The South was cut off days before Thread started to fall. Try as they might, Namyris couldn’t protect all of the Holdings still existing in the South. The holds consolidated around the Weyr.
Now, there are only two Queens left in the South, and one, Odeluth, has a clutch on the Sands. She was the survivor of the Dragon Disease, and now one knew whether being sick while clutching affected the eggs. With the Hatching coming up, everyone would soon know.
LOTS of open spots, and a clutch that is about to go on the sands.
