Character Number: 2nd
Character Name: D'con (formerly Daecon)
Age: 17 at Impression, currently 20
Sexuality Heterosexual
Appearance: If one work could describe D'con, it's disheveled. The young man always looks like he's been through a hurricane, his mid-length black hair always scruffy and unkempt, permanently swept into a do that's a cross between windswept and just-out-of-bed. His dark skin only helps to emphasize his unusually green eyes, and the pale scar riding over the brow of his left eye. Of average height and weight, his build doesn't stick out, and its often hidden under simple rider's leathers of dull black dye.
Personality: D'con, upon first Impressing, seemed to cling to the worst stereotypes of a bronzerider. He was bossy, pushy, acting like he's the best choice to lead in any situation and everyone else should understand that as well as he does. Now, however, the young man seems to have matured beyond measure. Still aloof and proud, he has mellowed somewhat, willing to follow direction if needed, even if he still inwardly believes he could likely do it better. He's gruff and taciturn, however, a tough exterior hides a weak core, and his actions are driven by a deep sense of self-doubt. He's tough because otherwise he'd get hurt. If he doesn't care, than there's no way to hurt him. It's only Simbath that keeps him grounded, and only Simbath that will never desert him or hurt him.
Biography: D'con was born Daecon, younger of twin brothers born to a farming cothold on Ista island. He was overshadowed by his older brother almost from the start, and his natural penchant for screwing up despite his best efforts only sunk him lower in his family's sights. If a boy couldn't even plant a seed right, or water crops enough, or remember to feed the animals, what good was he? His family all but ignored him, or refused him the dinner he could never help grow, who shamed their well-regarded family by insulting his journeyman mentor and even lost them many of their animals by setting the pens open in the middle of the night in an act of rebellion. Daecon abandoned his apprenticeship only a year after he began it, knowing then the farm life would never be for him, and made the journey to Ista Weyr in hopes of finding some purpose in the cacophany of a Weyr and putting his family far, far behind him.
What he found were dragons. And they found him. Somehow, they saw something buried deep in the boy that even he couldn't see, and the tiny shreds of hope he'd built up were dashed when the sands produced no lifemate. Feeling the rejection of his family all over again, he made plans at first light to leave Ista and the fresh injuries behind him, and booked passage on a ship bringing supplies to the new Weyr in the south. A new Weyr, formed by those seeking a new life? It seemed a good place to try and find a life for himself too.
He settled in as a drudge, helping with the basic duties around the Weyr. Work was interrupted one uneventful day by a sudden tremor, and then humming, and though he resisted Daecon found his co-workers dragging him to the stands to watch as strange new dragons walked off the sands. Deep in his heart, Daecon again felt the ache of abandonment and rejection of being left by family and dragon, and at first didn't realize the voice was speaking to him.
...don't worry, we're together now. I'll always look after you.[/i]
Daecon was shocked out of his thoughts as the crowd around him turned to a frenzy, hurridly bolting out of the way of a sandy, golden-bronze dragonet who was climbing up into the stands.
D'con, wake up! Wake up! Stop worrying, there's nothing to worry about. Your Simbath is here now![/i]
And so it was the young man was found by the dragon he's dared never to dream about, and hopefully, would never lose like he'd lost his family. His brief time as a weyrling was an eventful one, all of his time spent trying to manage and balance out his more dour temper with Simbath's exuberant one. Nevermind the little problem that the dragon also hated baths with a passion. They did prove a very competent pair when they could see eye to eye, however, and were beginning to show a great deal of promise when they all disappeared Between.
When they all returned, three years older, to the moment of their disappearance it was a new man and dragon who stood where weyrlings had before. D'con carried himself like a man twice his age, eyes hardened, and where Simbath had once been a rolly-polly goofball, now a tall and strapping bronze presented himself, eyes full of maturity and wisdom. Whatever happened in those moments Between had obviously changed the pair, but would it be for good or bad?
